What is regenerative blepharoplasty and how does it differ?

Regenerative blepharoplasty is an innovative approach to eyelid surgery that goes beyond simply removing excess skin and fat. The technique combines surgical precision with the principles of regenerative medicine, using nanofat (emulsified fat rich in stem cells) to improve tissue quality and achieve more natural, longer-lasting results.

Unlike traditional blepharoplasty, which can sometimes leave a “hollowed” or unnatural appearance, the regenerative approach redistributes existing volume and regenerates the tissue from within, preserving the natural expressiveness of the eyes.

Which techniques are used in regenerative blepharoplasty?

My experience in general surgery and my specialisation in regenerative techniques allow me to tailor the procedure to each patient’s anatomy.

Regenerative upper blepharoplasty: conservative removal of excess skin through incisions hidden in the natural eyelid crease. Fat is redistributed to maintain a youthful appearance without hollowing.

Conservative lower blepharoplasty: a transconjunctival approach where possible, with transposition of orbital fat to correct the tear trough and dark circles, avoiding a “sunken” look.

Regenerative nanofat: infiltration of emulsified fat rich in stem cells to improve skin texture, reduce fine lines and even out the colour of the periocular skin.

Canthopexy: repositioning of the outer corner of the eye to correct eyelid ptosis and achieve a more youthful, open gaze.

How is regenerative blepharoplasty performed?

  1. Pre-operative consultation: detailed analysis of eyelid anatomy, discussion of expectations and personalised surgical planning.
  2. Anaesthesia: local anaesthesia with conscious sedation for maximum patient comfort during the procedure.
  3. Fat harvesting: micro-liposuction from the abdomen or thighs to obtain the fat that will be processed into nanofat.
  4. Eyelid surgery: precise incisions, conservative redistribution of volume and correction of the specific concerns.
  5. Nanofat injection: infiltration of regenerative fat to improve skin quality and optimise results.
  6. Sutures and dressing: closure with very fine sutures and application of specific dressings to reduce swelling and bruising.

How long is the recovery after blepharoplasty?

Recovery after regenerative blepharoplasty is generally more comfortable than with traditional techniques, thanks to the conservative approach and the regenerative effect of nanofat.

Contraindications and precautions

The procedure isn’t indicated in cases of:

  • Uncontrolled coagulation disorders
  • Active autoimmune disease
  • Ongoing eye infection
  • Severe untreated dry eye
  • Unrealistic expectations
