What is lip filler and how does it work?
Lip filler is an aesthetic medicine treatment that involves injecting biocompatible substances, mainly hyaluronic acid, to increase lip volume, define their contour and correct any asymmetries. Hyaluronic acid is a substance naturally present in the human body, which ensures hydration and firmness in the tissue.

What techniques are used for lip filler?
In my practice I use several injection techniques, personalised to each patient’s anatomy and goals.
Linear technique: Ideal for defining the contour (vermillion border) and creating a more pronounced “Cupid’s bow”.
Bolus technique: Perfect for increasing volume at specific points and creating fuller, more sensual lips.
Fan technique: Used to distribute the product evenly for a very natural result.
Russian lips: An advanced technique to achieve lips with greater vertical projection and a heart-shaped profile.
How does the lip filler treatment work?
- Initial consultation: Together, we assess your goals and work out the shape best suited to your face.
- Preparation: Application of anaesthetic cream for 20-30 minutes to minimise discomfort.
- Injection: The filler is injected with very fine needles or cannulas, following the most appropriate technique.
- Massage: Gentle shaping to distribute the product evenly.
- Check: Immediate assessment of the result and any touch-ups.
How long do lip filler results last?
Lip filler results are immediate, although in the first 24-48 hours some mild swelling is normal and resolves on its own. The final effect is fully appreciated after about 2 weeks.
The treatment lasts between 6 and 12 months, depending on the type of product used, individual metabolism and lifestyle. Because the lips are a very mobile area, they tend to metabolise filler faster than other areas of the face.
Contraindications and precautions
The treatment isn’t recommended in cases of:
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding
- Active cold sores
- Autoimmune diseases
- Known allergies to hyaluronic acid
- Ongoing infections or inflammation
